Somaliland’s population recently experienced heavy droughts caused by climate change that is worsening day after day.
To promote climate-smart agricultural production systems, BVO organized and conducted two pieces of agriculture training for 100 farmers from the local community.
The farmers were trained in agroforestry systems, composting systems, legume integration, sustainable land management, and residue management systems.
As participants discussed and presented, there are many agro-production challenges in Geed-Deeble, including the reduction of rains, increased heat, soil erosion, harmful insects, shortage of water, poor water pumps, lack of modern technology systems, less agricultural support, and an inadequate level of modern agricultural skills and knowledge.
Some of these challenges are caused by the recent climate change impacts and lack of natural disaster protections, while others are caused by different factors, such as a lack of resources and resource mobilization, a lack of knowledge of how to manage modern agro-production systems, and so on.
To find the solution to the above-mentioned climate change and agro-production challenges, participants were trained on how to: a) increase diversity and complexity within agricultural ecosystems by expanding the diversity of crops and crop varieties; b) improve sustainable soil and land management; c) promote sustainable mechanisms; and so on.
